Briony’s Sculpture Studio

Self-build sculpture studio for my sister at the end of her garden.

My sister Briony asked me to design a studio at the end of her garden where she can make her sculptures. She needed lots of storage space, a dust free desk, and a high very light space for making large structures. She had a shoestring budget. We worked together to hone the design, and I drew up the plans to secure planning permission. Briony is the project manager to reduce costs. The foundations were built by a groundworks contractor, but Briony has done the rest of the construction herself, with help from some young strong labourers. She sourced windows and doors second hand, and the timber studs were surplus from another project. Being a sculptor, Briony has a great sense of space, so it has been fun teaching her to detail, and having to answer akward questions that challenge my knowledge.
